The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Kikunosuke Onoue, the adopted son of a legendary actor and himself an actor specializing in female roles, discovers in late-nineteenth-century Tokyo that he is only praised for his acting because of his father's heirship. Devastated, he seeks comfort from Otoku, a family servant, and the two fall in love. Kikunosuke becomes determined to leave home and pursue a career as an actor on his own terms, and Otoku follows him with zeal.
