A Thousand Clowns
Nick,12, lives with his Uncle Murray, a Mr. Micawber-like Dickensian character who is always wishing something will go wrong. What appears is a social worker who has feelings for Murray and a smidgeon of feelings for Nick. As the child protection workers try to persuade Murray to become a conventional man (as a condition of enabling him to keep Nick), the nephew, who has previously admired his Uncle's iconoclastic attitude to life, tries to mediate. When he succeeds, though, he is taken aback by the uncle's willingness to submit to society in order to save the relationship.
