Filmmaker Guido Anselmi is at the pinnacle of his profession when he has a creative dry spell. Anselmi's doctors have advised him to take a break, so he's checking into a five-star resort. However, his producer, crew, actors, wife, mistress, and family have all tracked him down and are pleading with him to return to work. As a form of self-protection against their reliance on him, he retreats into childhood nostalgia and daydreams about bygone women.
